House of Grain

Kornets Hus, or House of Grain, is a cultural center created on the land of an existing farm and bakery in the agricultural heart of Denmark, south of the small town of Hjørring. This mainland region features diverse terrain and extensive historical heritage, including some of the nation’s oldest archaeological evidence of human settlements. Its role in the production of grain used to nourish Denmark’s entire population stretches back to the country’s origins: House of Grain was created to celebrate and embody this rich legacy.

Intended to offer inspiration and education about the pivotal role of grain not only throughout Danish history but for all of human civilization, this center offers a dynamic space for immersive learning experiences, and baking classes. The building was thoughtfully designed to convey knowledge about grains as an essential component of nutrition, and to introduce the story of grain’s profound impact on human life.

Drawing architectural inspiration from research on the region’s picturesque landscapes, folk traditions, and agricultural legacy, the center is characterized by its distinctive design, which features two brick-clad light wells that reimagine the essence of traditional baker’s ovens. Inside, careful consideration has been given to the breathtaking western vista of expansive wheat fields, creating a seamless connection with the outdoors by framing panoramic views and opening onto a welcoming terrace and an outdoor baking pavilion in the garden area.

The Kornets Hage (the Garden of Grain) outdoor facility has been developed at a later stage and aims towards a broad audience of families, children and school students.

The heart of the facility revolves around a spacious bread oven, which serves as the focal point for public gatherings and communal activities. Teaching and exhibition areas are illuminated by natural light which streams in through strategically positioned skylights, enhancing the overall sense of volume and openness.

Characterized by its unique personality and architectural excellence, House of Grain has become a tangible reflection of this region’s cultural and historical significance.
